I completed the first version of this AT-AT model in 2019, but since then, I have improved enough in my modeling/texturing/rigging/animating skills that I wanted to revisit it.
My goal was to get better proportions, as well as improve the armature, animations, and up-res textures. There are three 4k textures: one each for the head, body and legs. One thing that I did differently this time was to generate an edge map texture that highlights mesh edges, and when overlayed onto the diffuse texture, gives edges a softer look while also helping to define areas of detail. I used to paint these edges by hand which took hours. Now I have a node group in Blender that will bake it for me in minutes 😄
You can see both of these models, new and old, animated over on Sketchfab. Each has a walk cycle, and for fun I added a trip and fall animation to the new version like is seen in the Battle of Hoth scene in Empire Strikes back when the snowspeeders use their tow cables!
